National Head Start Family Literacy Center
Supporting Parents to Succeed ~ A Family Literacy Training~
Offered May 6, 8, 14, 15, 20, 22

The research shows a direct correlation between parent educational success and children’s success in school. All parents want their children to succeed in school but often find it hard to pursue their own educational goals. There is a new body of research that identifies the supports that parents need in order to succeed in completing their education so they can better support their child’s growth and development. A portion of this day will focus on fostering collaborations with community partners which enable families to overcome the barriers that hinder the educational process. Participants will identify strengths and gaps in their communities and ways to close those gaps.

Coupled with this, it is critically important for parents to recognize and appreciate their role as their “child’s first teacher and full partner in their child’s education”. Participants will consider ways of supporting families in facilitating their children’s language and literacy development. This portion of the day will feature a video that shows some of the many ways parents teach their children from the moment they are born.

Educating the Heart and Mind
Offered May 29, San Luis Obispo

Encouraging pro-social behavior and dealing with children's conflicts are daily challenges for early childhood educators. Research confirms that social skills can be successfully taught to preschoolers. Further research demonstrates that the acquisition of these skills leads to positive behavioral changes in the classroom and in the playground. This presentation will demonstrate methods and materials to teach children pro-social skills to reduce physical and verbal aggression and disruptive behaviors.

Using the Second Step program as an example, participants will learn to how to teach children to deal with emotions, resist impulsive behavior, resolve conflict, solve problems, and understand the consequences of their actions. Research shows important connections between children's social and emotional skills and academic achievement. Participants will be introduced to the Research that has proven that empathy, impulse control, and anger management are essential social skills that can be taught to children. Children with pro-social skills experience growth in self-confidence and a readiness for academic learning. Participants will also learn the keys to successfully administer social skills programs and set them up for long term sustainability in their centers.
